Smith giving "Super" effort to crack Cats lineup
Alfonso Smith is a guy who can do it all. He's earned the nickname "Superman." Apparently there was no Kryptonite at Commonwealth Stadium Saturday. In the Blue-White game, Snith was returning kicks, making tackles on special teams, oh, and racking up 170 yards rushing.
Smith says he needs to continue working as hard as he can in practice and keep up his "work ethic."
The junior's work ethic already caught the attention of head coach Rich Brooks. Early last season, Smith made the most of his opportunites while filling in for UK's injured running backs. This coming season Smith may not need an injury to a teammate to get more chances to show his stuff.
Brooks says Smith has improved his "North-South" running---bolting straight ahead when he has the ball and not dancing around the tackles.
As strong as the former Waggener Wildcat has been in his first two seasons with the Kentucky Wildcats, there's always room for improvement. That can lead to an improvment in his status on the depth chart.
Brooks says Smith needs to improve his pass-catching. The UK head coach says he's happy with the four tailbacks he has, all who are trying to fill a large hole left by Rafael Little's departure from Kentucky. Smith says he's not worried about a roster filled with tailbacks. He says he'll get playing time. Some say he's over-confident. Smith says players in the SEC have to have confidence or they'll never make it in the league.
UK and UofL meet in the season opener August 31st at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
