The New York Giants are off to their best start since 2000, and a late play that was not reviewed in overtime may have helped.
John Carney kicked a 22-yard field goal with 8:39 left in the extra session and the Super Bowl champions overcame a strong effort by the winless Cincinnati Bengals for a 26-23 victory on Sunday.
The play that set up the winning kick was a 31-yard pass from Eli Manning to Amani Toomer down the left sideline. It was difficult to tell whether Toomer got both feet in bounds. The Giants hustled to the line of scrimmage and handed the ball to Derrick Ward for a 3-yard run to the Bengals 4, precluding a video review.
The NFL official in the press box conceivably could have seen that the play was OK, and opted to let it stand.
(At) Tennessee 31, Houston 12 | The Titans remained perfect in their best start since their lone Super Bowl appearance.
LenDale White ran for two touchdowns, Kerry Collins threw for another and Tennessee rolled over the Texans to improve to 3-0 for only the third time in franchise history.
(At) Buffalo 24, Oakland 23 | Trent Edwards and the Bills overcame a sloppy start to produce a second straight fourth-quarter comeback victory.
Rian Lindell hit a 38-yard field goal as the clock ran out, capping a win over the Raiders. Edwards engineered three scoring drives in the final quarter, helping the Bills twice overcome nine-point deficits in the last 8 minutes.
(At) Atlanta 38, Kansas City 14 | Michael Turner ran for three touchdowns and the Falcons scored the first 24 points to beat Kansas Cit, giving the Chiefs their 12th straight loss.

Tampa Bay 27, (at) Chicago 24 (OT) | Brian Griese saved his big shot for the last moment.
Griese set up Matt Bryant's winning 21-yard field goal in overtime with a 38-yard pass to Antonio Bryant, and the Buccaneers rallied to beat the Bears.
After blowing a 14-point lead in a 20-17 loss at Carolina last week, the Bears couldn't protect a 24-14 advantage in the fourth quarter.
(At) Washington 24, Arizona 17 | Carlos Rogers' 42-yard interception return of a tipped pass set up the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and the Redskins controlled the rest of the game for a victory over the Cardinals.
Rogers got the ball to Arizona's 15-yard line. Two plays later, Santana Moss took a receiver screen for a 17-yard touchdown pass that broke a 17-17 tie.
(At) Seattle 37, St. Louis 13 | All the ailing, winless Seahawks needed was everyone's cure-all, a visit from the Rams.
Julius Jones ran for 140 yards on 22 carries and T.J. Duckett had his first two-touchdown rushing day in four years as the Seahawks sidestepped six injuries at wide receiver and rolled over the malfunctioning Rams.
(At) San Francisco 31, Detroit 13 | Frank Gore rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown, and Mike Martz's new offense methodically chewed up his former team's defense in the 49ers' victory over the Lions.
Isaac Bruce and Delanie Walker caught TD passes from J.T. O'Sullivan, and kick returner Allen Rossum scored a 1-yard TD rushing on fourth down near the goal line to all but clinch the win for San Francisco.
(At) Denver 34, New Orleans 32 |
Martin Gramatica's 43-yard field goal try with 1:55 remaining was wide right, and the Broncos escaped with a win over the Saints.
The Broncos improved to 3-0 for the first time in five years despite allowing Drew Brees to complete 39 of 48 passes for 421 yards and a touchdown and Reggie Bush to pile up 178 all-purpose yards and two TDs.
(At) Baltimore 28, Cleveland 10 |
Baltimore turned two of Derek Anderson's interceptions into a pair of touchdowns during a 50-second span of the third quarter, and the rested Ravens stayed unbeaten.
Ed Reed returned one of the interceptions 32 yards for a score, and Le'Ron McClain scored his first two NFL touchdowns on a pair of 1-yard runs both during a 21-point third quarter that turned a 3-point halftime deficit into a 28-10 lead.
Jacksonville 23, (at) Indianapolis 21 | Josh Scobee proved Jacksonville's traditional formula still works.
After wearing out the Indy defense on the ground, Scobee saved the game and perhaps the season by making a 51-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to give the Jaguars a victory, their first in Indy since 2004.
