Kentucky returns to Music City, will face FSU
University of Kentucky senior quarterback Andre Woodson was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player, the school announced yesterday.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky is heading back to the Music City Bowl.
After a disappointing finish to the regular season, the Wildcats (7-5) will make a second straight appearance in the Music City Bowl in Nashville on Dec. 31.
Kentucky will face Florida State (7-5) and head coach Bobby Bowden, the winningest coach in college football history. The Wildcats beat Clemson, coached by Bobby's son Terry Bowden, 28-20, in last year's game.
"We had a great experience a year ago in Nashville," Brooks said. "Our players are excited to go back there."
Kentucky's players relished the opportunity to face a program with the national visibility of the
Florida State Seminoles.
"It adds a lot (to the game) because when you think about Florida State, you think about national championships," senior wide receiver Keenan Burton said. "You think about the Warrick Dunns, the Peter Warricks, so many great players. The only thing you can do is be excited. If you can't get excited for this game, you don't have a pulse."
Brooks said the game should not be a letdown for his team or its fans, even though Kentucky climbed into the Top 10 after sprinting to a 6-1 start that included an upset of top-ranked Louisiana State.
"Would we have been more excited to be playing in the SEC Championship game or National Championship game or something else? Sure we would," Brooks said. "But this is a quality bowl against a quality opponent and an experience that we thoroughly enjoyed a year ago, and we're looking forward to the opportunity."
Senior quarterback Andre Woodson said his classmates are motivated to end their careers on a positive note.
"It's going to be very important," Woodson said. "With everything that we've worked for to turn this program around, to go out with a win would be huge for us seniors. It would do wonders for the next classes as they prepare and get ready for the upcoming season. That will give them a lot of momentum in the offseason to really go out there and strive to be a better team and continue what we've started."
While Florida State coach Bobby Bowden is coaching in his 26th consecutive bowl game at the school, Kentucky is making just the 12th bowl appearance in school history. The Wildcats haven't won consecutive bowl games since 1950 and 1951.
"When you're talking about the 12th bowl game in school history, let's face it folks, this is a pretty good football team to accomplish what we did here in the last two years," Brooks said. "It's my opinion that we need to follow up with another one next year, and I think we're in position to go forward next season."
