Georgia athlete commits, wants shot to play QB
Matt Roark isn't sure whether he wants to be a wide receiver or a quarterback in college. But he'd like the chance to give quarterback a try.
The University of Kentucky is willing to give Roark the opportunity, and that was one of the deciding factors in the Acworth, Ga., player's verbal commitment to UK on Wednesday night.
Roark called UK offensive coordinator and future head coach Joker Phillips with the news. Roark, who stands an Andre Woodson-like 6-foot-6 and weighs 190 pounds, is listed as a three-star prospect (out of a possible five stars).
"I just want the chance to play quarterback," Roark said. "I'm not sure that's where I'll end up, but I want to go somewhere I can figure it out."
Roark was also considering scholarship offers from Duke, Illinois, Wake Forest and Oregon.
"I felt like Kentucky was the offense that fit me best," Roark said. "I've always liked the basketball team, and once I got to know more about the school and met the coaches I knew it was the place for me."
Roark is the second commitment that the Wildcats have received this week, joining wide receiver Eric Adeyemi. Adeyemi, a 6-foot, 156-pounder from Miami's Southridge High, is a two-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com.
Phillips served as Roark's primary recruiter, and the player was pleased with the announcement that Phillips would be head coach Rich Brooks' successor whenever Brooks steps down.
"I wasn't really surprised," Roark said. "I think it's great news."
