Veteran defensive end Renaldo Wynn has agreed to a contract with the defending champion New York Giants, the team announced Monday.
Terms were not disclosed, but according to The Star Ledger of Newark the deal was for one year.
"Renaldo is a solid veteran who can give us some snaps on the inside or the outside,"
general manager Jerry Reese said.
The Giants add Wynn with end Osi Umenyiora featured as a defensive anchor and defensive end Michael Strahan undecided on whether he'll return for a 16th season.
"We always like to add defensive linemen,"
Reese said. "We're still not sure what Michael is going to do as far as retirement goes. If Michael does retire it gives us a veteran who can play end and tackle. It gives us more veteran depth, instead of having too many young guys."
Wynn, an 11-year veteran out of Notre Dame, was the 21st overall pick for the Jaguars in 1997.
He played 12 games for the Saints in 2007 after five seasons with the Redskins. He had 13 tackles and 3½ sacks with New Orleans last season.
Wynn, a Chicago native, will be reunited with coach Tom Coughlin, who coached the Jaguars from 1994 to 2002.
Wynn is expected to serve as a backup at tackle for the Giants in passing situations, a familiar role for the 33-year-old.
"That's very valuable,"
Coughlin said. "We've seen that with Justin Tuck. Renaldo can play the run on first and second down -- he doesn't have to come in only on pass downs. He played inside last year, so he can defend against the run."
Wynn, 6-foot-3 and 296 pounds, recorded a career-high five sacks and 40 tackles with Jacksonville in 2001, his last year with the Jaguars.
